A reference to Pearl Harbor in a news story about the Japanese National High School Wrestling Team is drawing groans and admonishment from many in the journalism community, reports Canada.com. (file photo by Tsutomu Takasu)
The lead in the Cochrane Times, a newspaper in Alberta read:
“They saw, they came, they conquered. Japan has never had such an easy time of it since their surprise attack on Pearl Harbor as the Japanese National High School Wrestling Team invaded the home of the Cowboys Wrestling Club at Spray Lake Sawmills Family Sports Center, Jan. 5, and annihilated their competition.”
It’s amazing more than 70 years after Pearl Harbor that someone is equating a group of high school kids to something that happened 50 to 55 years before they were even born. Imagine if a little league team from the United States had annihilated a Japanese team and the reporter from Japan made a reference to the atomic bomb drops on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
