YOMYOMF: David Henry Hwang had given up on his play about Bruce Lee

Kung Fu, Cole HoribeHave you checked out David Henry Hwang’s journal about rehearsals for his upcoming play, Kung Fu, starring Season 9 So You Think You Can Dance star, the Hawaii-born Cole Horibe?

You can follow the Tony-winning playwright’s thoughts leading up to his play about Bruce Lee in You Offend Me, You Offend My Family.

“Our first rehearsal, on January 2nd, was particularly emotional for me. Probably because it had taken twenty years to arrive at that day,” Hwang wrote.

He said he first began writing the play in 2003 and first conceived it in 1993.

“But I couldn’t get it right. Though I wrote draft after draft, the story and characters wouldn’t come alive for me. By 2009, the producer and my fellow artists had given up on me, and the project fell apart.”

So how did the project come back together? You can read about that in You Offend Me, You Offend My Family.

Then check out the video of the first rehearsals in Entertainment Weekly.

Kung Fu opens at World Premiere at the Signature Theatre in New York on February 24
