Bong Joon Ho criticizes AI, jokes about destroying it with a military squad

Bong Joon Ho celebrates award for best original screenplay

Bong Joon Ho and other prominent film industry creatives criticized the use of artificial intelligence in their industry during a jury panel at the Marrakech Film Festival on Saturday.

During a jury conference for the festival, Deadline reports, the South Korean director was asked about his thoughts on the rise of AI technology.

“My official answer is, AI is good because it’s the very beginning of the human race finally seriously thinking about what only humans can do. But my personal answer is, I’m going to organize a military squad, and their mission is to destroy AI,” he said, per Deadline.

Bong is serving as the Marrakech Film Festival’s jury president this year. He had high praise for the festival’s contribution to the world of film.

“I was greedily devouring movies as a student of cinema,” he said, per Variety. “Looking back, my 22-year-old self was brimming with energy and passion for cinema. I feel that Marrakech is also buzzing with a special energy as it enters its 22nd year.”

According to World of Reel, Bong recently announced that his upcoming animated feature will be released in 2027. He says the film is set in Simahe, a dark and gloomy place, with “cute but very lonely characters.”

Registration is closed for Common Ground: Building Together conference and gala award banquet in San Francisco on January 24. A shoutout to our planning committee: Jane Chin, Frank Mah, Jeannie Young, Akemi Tamanaha, Nathan Soohoo, Mark Young, Dave Liu, and Yiming Fu.
