First-year Brown University graduate student, Hyoun Ju Sohn GS, committed suicide this Tuesday.
Sohn, from Korea, had been studying physics at the university. According to the Brown Daily Herald, Sohn had jumped from a 12th story window of the Science Library (photo by Daehyun Park), and within minutes after his death, police, who had been notified about a possible suicide attempt earlier in the day, arrived on the scene.
At a school wide vigil held on Tuesday evening, university president Christina Paxson spoke on the nature of Sohn’s death.
“It’s a time when we have to think — how can we care for each other better as a community?” Paxson said as she struggled to hold back tears.
