Buzz Feed published 15 valentines day cards from yesteryear. The cards from the early 1900s reminds anyone who didn’t remember–those were racist times.
The cards played on stereotypes of African Americans, Asian Americans and Native Americans. Caricatures of each group were a poor but acceptable attempt of humor during those times.
“They capture in a material object the racial discourse occurring at the moment…You can really get a sense of how common and everyday and widely accepted these cards were. It gestures to this past moment when racism was more apparent in society, ” said Harvey Young, Jr., an Associate Professor at Northwestern. You can see all 15 cards in Buzz Feed.
