With the recent shooting of a Hmong woman by her ex-husband, the issue of domestic violence in Asian American households has come to greater light.

According to the Fresno Bee, this male-dominated Hmong culture run by “traditional family values” has led to domestic violence, and a lack of willingness to discuss the issue.

“Domestic violence is a very shameful act. Domestic violence exists in all races, all societies…the Hmong people are probably one of the last groups that has not learned how to talk openly about domestic issues, ” Summer Vue, a victim of abuse and community activist, said.

Hmong activists are working to combat this issue through a variety of open community forums, including a “men’s healing circle” led by Hmong activist Steve Thao.
