Lunar New YearIt’s time to shed your skin. The Year of the Snake on the Lunar New Year calendar is a time for a fresh start. So says Dr Ricky Choi in a commentary for Perspective on KQED.

While many outside the Asian American community consider the Lunar New Year a Chinese holiday, it’s really an Asian American holiday with Lunar New Year observed in the Chinese, Korean, Mongolian, Tibetan and Vietnamese communities. How did Lunar New Year become so largely connected to Chinese New Year? The popularity of the Chinese New Year Parade in San Francisco and other cities is likely the reason.

Choi provides a perspective of the Korean American community on the Lunar New Year. From white oval rice cakes to children showing their thanks and respect for their elders. Hear about some of the Korean American Lunar New Year traditions in this perspective.
