In the California state capitol, a bill is on its way to the governor’s office to establish a similar committee in the state. AB 101 requires the superintendent of schools to establish an Ethnic Studies Advisory Committee by the start of the 2016 -2017 school year.
Both Los Angles and San Francisco passed ethnic studies requirements last year. In Los Angeles, by the year 2019, ethnic studies will be a required course for graduation in LA. In San Francisco, the city’s 19 high schools must all offer ethnic studies courses.
You can read an op-ed piece by The National Association of Multicultural Education about why ethnic studies is an integral part of a child’s education in the San Diego Union Tribune.
