Father’s Day marked the one year anniversary of the the death of Cincinnati Police Officer Sonny Kim.

The 27-year veteran of the force was gunned down last year when Kim exchanged fire with a gunman.

Flowers were left at a police memorial in memory of Kim yesterday and a private prayer service was held among police officers, reported WLWT. He was survived by his wife Jessica and three sons.

“He was the father figure almost 24/7, so here we are a year after his death, a year after his tragic death and on Father’s Day, said Sergeant Daniel Hills, president of the Fraternal Order Police.

Kim also was known as Sensei and an internationally recognized sixth-degree black belt. He also was an instructor at Karate-Do in Cincinnati.

They held a martial arts event in his honor Saturday.

“Whether you knew him personally, whether you knew about him it didn’t matter. All martial artists stick together. So, it’s a big community of people that were just trying to get together and just celebrate this hero’s life. He’s a hero,” organizer John Ritter said.
