To be Asian American or not to be Asian America?
It sounds like a silly question, but it really isn’t for many Asian Americans traversing the mine field known as a career path.
Do we advocate for diversity or do we try to blend in with everyone else?
Do we speak up against microaggressions or do we ignore them?
Do we offer an Asian American perspective that might help our company reach a demographic they may be overlooking or do we stay silent?
Those were the type of questions tormenting the soul of Newbery Honor-nominated children’s author and illustrator Grace Lin. The Taiwanese American author once questioned her own writing when someone suggested she was only being published because her books were quote unquote “multicultural” and multicultural is hot.
That made Lin question her own skills.
You can hear her confront those demons in the commentary below she wrote for New England Public Radio/
