Former Oakland Mayor Jean Quan Proposed Pot Dispensary Meets Opposition

Former Mayor Jean Quan Marijuana Dispensary plan attracts protestorsTwo dueling protests blew smoke at each other over plans by former Oakland Mayor Jean Quan to open a pot dispensary in San Francisco’s Sunset District, reported ABC7.

The dispensary would be down the street from the Lutheran Church of the Holy Spirit.

“I cannot even stand it,” said one of 100 anti-cannibis protesters. “Horrible smell.” Those who agreed with her appeared to be mostly Chinese residents

On the other side were 12 pro-marijuana demonstrators throwing their support to Quan’s plans.

“Politicians are always easy targets,” Quan said.

Quan hopes to open the dispensary with her husband, Dr. Floyd Huen.

“It’s important that Asian Pacific Americans and other minorities take positions of leadership within the cannabis business community to bring greater diversity to the industry,” Huen said in the San Francisco Chronicle.

The storefront would be the latest Apothecarium to open. The high-end medical marijuana business got its start in San Francisco’s Castro six years ago and has spread to the upscale Marina neighborhood and downtown Berkeley.

“This is a beachhead for bringing recreational marijuana to the Sunset, and we don’t want it sold in our neighborhood,” said Valerie Schmalz, who spoke up against the plan at a recent public meeting.
