A just surfaced Instagram post showing children pulling their eyes back in a mocking gesture of Asians has gotten a staffer for a New York State Senator suspended, reports the New York Post.
Daiquan Frasier is the community coordinator for Senator Brian Benjamin. He posted a photo in 2016 of an Asian man surrounded by children pulling the corner of their eyes. The caption read “When you try to help the children in need but end up getting roasted instead.”
The Post brought the photo to the attention of the Senator who took action immediately, suspended Frasier and telling him he would need to undergo “sensitivity training” to get his job back.
Frasier’s Instagram account is now private. It is unclear how the Post obtained the photo and when Frasier made his account private.
State Assemblyperson Ron Kim (D-NY) called the post immature and said he would work to ward off any further misunderstanding.
“We’ll try to work together in making sure that there’s no misunderstanding between the two communities — Asian-American and African-American — and that our staff members don’t reflect the wrong type of values,” Kim told the Post.
