Many Disney fans are excited to watch Disney Pixar’s latest film, Incredibles 2, but with each new Pixar film comes a new Pixar short.
Pixar has recently released a sneak peek of its upcoming short Bao, about a mother with empty-nest syndrome and a dumpling that comes to life.
The short was directed by Chinese-Canadian director, Domee Shi. In addition to bringing representation to the Chinese immigrant community, Shi is also the first female director of a Pixar short.
Shi based the short on her experiences growing up in the Chinese community in Toronto and even had her mother consult on the film.

Shi explained to Entertainment Weekly, “The word ‘bao’ actually means two things in Chinese: Said one way, it means steamed bun. Said another, it means something precious. A treasure.”
When news of the short first broke out last month, Shi received a lot of media buzz for representing both women and Asian Americans in popular film.
In an official statement, Pixar states, “Mom excitedly welcomes this new bundle of joy into her life, but Dumpling starts growing up fast, and Mom must come to the bittersweet revelation that nothing stays cute and small forever.”
Bao is set to premiere with Incredibles 2 on June 15.
