Plans for a memorial to comfort women in Fort Lee, New Jersey have been sidetracked by dissension within the Korean American community. The mayor ordered the memorial to be put on hold until the Korean American community could work out its differences, according to North Jersey.com.
The design for the memorial was submitted by the Korean American Vietnam War Veterans Group. It shows a Korean women wearing a traditional Korean robe with a Japanese flag in the background. Some members of the Korean community including Korean American Civic Empowerment launched an online petition drive in protests of the design and the inscription because they say it will reignite tensions between Japan and Korea.
Comfort women were forced into sex slavery during World War II by the Japanese military, something Japan continues to vehemently deny.
