DryBar Customer Described as “Chinky Eyes”

A day of celebration turned into a day of hurt and anger for a nursing student attending New York University.

Briana Tae went to DryBar Murray Hill to get her hair done for her nursing school pinning ceremony. “A great day to be expected,” she wrote on Facebook. “I look over and see this ”

“Client: Briana, Description: Chinky eyes.” ??? I’m sorry, what? I was the ONLY customer waiting with my friend and rather than describe me by my hair that was in a bun or by my black jacket or as a girl with a friend, I was described as a girl with chinky eyes. I have never in my life been so appalled.”

Tae said the employee failed to understand why she was upset.

“That word is pretty much congruent to the ‘n-word’,” Tae said to CBS2. “Very offensive.”

A manager refused to answer CBS2’s questions. However, later a spokesperson for the company told the TV station the employee involved was no longer working there.

“It’s very serious to us,” the spokesperson said.

Tae says all she wants is an apology.

  1. RE: Dry Blow Customer Described as “Chinky Eyes”: Once again an apology has three parts: “I’m sorry”; … “…for…”; “and I will … to make amends”. A change in behavior thru understanding why it was, she is racist and offensive.
