Box Office Mojo reported that The Farewell just hit $10 million in the box office, making it one of the biggest success stories of 2019.
According to Business Insider, A24 bought the film for approximately $7 million from this year’s Sundance Film Festival. It first opened in only four theatres in July but exceeded the best per-theatre at the box office average of Endgame.
Forbes reported that The Farewell brought in $2.2 million just over the past weekend.
“A24 is aiming to build word of mouth from that initial platform audience in hopes of expanding to the broader, general audience without incurring the kind of major marketing budget needed to push an original movie nationwide from the outset — which is an increasingly large challenge in today’s landscape,” said Robbins, a chief analyst for theboxoffice.com.
A24 has developed a reputation for distributing high quality content and has thus been able to grow a larger fan base. The Farewell is now playing in 409 theatres.
