Awkwafina to Star in and Produce Film About Chinatown’s Influence on California Punk Rock

Awkwafina will produce and star in a feature film about the influence Chinatown restaurants had on California punk rock, Deadline reports. The film will be made in collaboration with Topic Studios.

According to The Wrap, the film is based on an article published on Topic.com titled “How Chinese Food Fueled the Rise of California Punk.” It was written by Madeline Leung Coleman. The article describes how restaurants in Chinatown became important venues for California punk rock bands during the 1970s and 80.

“In the late 1970s and early ‘80s, from Sacramento to San Francisco, some of the state’s most important punk venues were actually Chinese and Filipino restaurants,” the article states.

Awkwafina will produce alongside Ryan Heller, Topic Studios SVP of film and acquisitions. Topic Studios say they are excited to work with Awkwafina, Deadline reports.

“We couldn’t ask for a better partner to help us bring this vibrant world to life than Awkwafina,” said Maria Zuckerman, EVP of Topic Studios. “Madeline’s article explores an unexpected connection and collaboration which gave rise to an essential and very punk moment.”
