Bong Joon Ho accepts award for best international film at Spirit Awards

In what fans hope is a precursor to the Academy Awards, director Bong Joon Ho accepted the Spirit award Saturday night for his film Parasite as best international film.

Parasite is the first South Korean film ever nominated for best picture at the Oscars as well as best director, best original screenplay, best international film, film editing, and production design.

“Thank you so much. It’s a huge honor. I’m sure you guys are familiar with having a translator here by now. Ten years ago I came here with my previous film Mother which was nominated for a film, although I didn’t get to win I remember the tent being very memorable.

“Suddenly I remember the very first day of the screening of the film Parasite in New York-very old classic theater. During the Q&A, I saw a rat running in the background. It was a very old theater and while giving my answer I saw a rat scurrying around the audience and at the time I thought it was a symbol of luck.”

Then switching to English, he wrapped up by saying “Sorry, forget it, Thank you.”

Parasite has already been awarded best foreign language film at the Golden Globes and best film not in English at the British Academy Film Awards. The Screen Actors Guild Awards presented the entire cast with best ensemble in a motion picture.
