Educators release guidelines to counter coronavirus racism

Bilingual Education

Both the Department of Education and National Association of School Psychologists have released guidance to schools on preventing the bullying of Asian American students due to coronavirus.

“School officials may not rely on assumptions or stereotypes related to race, color, or national origin in identifying students who may have recently traveled to a country with widespread transmission of coronavirus or who may otherwise be at risk of coronavirus infection,” the guidance from the Department of Education advised, according to Rollcall.

The National Association of School Psychologists released 14 recommendations. They include talking to students about their fears and countering misinformation. Being Asian does not increase the chance of having or spreading coronavirus.

Teachers are urged to support Asian students who feel they have been targeted by microaggressions or discriminatory remarks.

Empower students to seek help and and speak out against any bullying.

Educators should also present positive images of diverse groups and identify heroes of various backgrounds.
