Census bureau statistics show Asian Americans in 2011 had a higher poverty rate than whites by 2. 5 percentage points, reports the LA Times.
The statistics shatter a common perception that Asian Americans enjoy higher incomes than the rest of the population.
Because Asian Americans are clustered in expensive areas of the country such as California and New York, when the figures are adjusted by cost differences, Asian Americans had a 16.1 percent poverty rate versus just 10.4% for whites.
