PRI: Asian Market in Missouri Catering to Non-Asian Market

 

AfricanIt’s common for big supermarkets these days to cater to ethnic markets. But in Missouri, a small Asian market has made a name for itself doing the same thing.

Chong’s Oriental Market in Columbia, Mo has become the go to market for the city’s African community. The market opened in 1990 as the city’s only Asian market. But the Korean immigrant family which opened the market has shifted its strategy with the city’s shifting population.

“We have other cultures that come to our store just to buy produce and things. They’re like, ‘Hey you should start carrying this’, and I’m like, ‘Maybe I should,’” Daewun Sin told PRI
