Public work crews will sweep through Chinatown in Salinas, CA to chase away the homeless, reports KSBW. Chinatown in the historic city of author John Steinbeck has largely become the skid row of the city.
The Homeless complain they have no where to go and that Salinas officials have not offered them a homeless shelter.
“When you have nothing to begin with, losing everything is really depressing. It sucks the wind out of your sails,” homeless resident Danny Olf said. “It really just seems they don’t care. They don’t even consider us as people.”
Authorities say they know the homeless will eventually return to the area, but say the sweep is necessary so that the area can be cleaned. The sweep is conducted regularly three times a year.
