Today marks the beginning of Ramadan in the Muslim American community.
Many celebrants will be gathering in Islamic centers for worship and to observe the occasion.
According to the Voice of America, traditions include shopping at Halal meat stores to prepare Iftal meals at the end of their day long fasts.
“We try to make people feel like they are in any Muslim country and Muslim community,” said Imam Abdulla Khouj, president of the Islamic Center in Washington D.C. “We offer the meal to break their fast. We have more than 600 people, males and females, their children, and families. They break their fast and pray with us.”
The Iftal meal is followed by prayer each night.
