Newly elected mayor Eric Garcetti of Los Angeles has long ties with the city’s historic Filipinotown.
Garcetti sponsored a resolution in 2002 to designate the approximately five mile area Filipinotown. Now that he’s mayor, he wants to launch a program to spur economic growth in the area, according to GMA.
Currently there’s not an anchor business in the neighborhood to attract tourists or visitors.
The historic Filipino Christian Church is designated a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument.
A collection of Filipino books which used to be housed at the church is looking for a new home.
A colorful mural by Eliseo Silva depicts 5,000 years of Filipino and Filipino American history.
”Now that we’ve done some work in cementing the neighborhood’s identity, making the streets safer, and holding annual festivals, I’m looking forward to partnering with the community organizations to take things to the next level,” Garcetti said.
