Oklahoman: Smithsonian Grant Encourages Students to gather Oral Histories from Asian Americans

Chinatown San Francisco Bancroft LibraryMiddle school students in Oklahoma City are being taught how to gather oral histories from Asian Americans, reports the Oklahoman.

You can watch a brief video of a lesson being taught to the students below.

The Oklahoma History Center received a grant of $2,500 from the Smithsonian Institution for the project and  is facilitating the lessons.

The first Asians arrived in Oklahoma in 1889 and today the state is home to 3 million Asian Americans.

“I want to know what brought them to the United States during the land run,” 12-year-old Sam Wishon said. “I was thinking about how they must have felt coming here and looking for a better life for themselves and for their children. Here their children could go to college or get jobs.”

You can read more about the project in the Oklahoman.
