India West: Asian Americans Lack Information on Affordable Care Act

CATEGORIES

Health Care, HospitalA new Field Poll has found two-thirds of Asian Americans in California say they need more information on the Affordable Care Act, reports India West.

That spikes to 82 percent when non-English speaking Asians are polled.

“There is a big information gap that needs to be filled,” noted Mark diCamillo, director of the Field Poll

The Affordable Care Act provides subsidized health care for those who cannot afford health insurance and others who meet certain income qualifications. Health insurance is now mandatory under the law. The deadline is March 31, but you must sign up by December 15 if you’d like to be insured by January 1.

In the Indian American community, the South Asian Network in Southern California is providing information in Hindi, Urdu, Bangla, Punjabi and Gujarati.

“The focus of SAN’s work is the low-income community, who may not have had a formal education. It may be difficult for them to understand health insurance,” said

Manju Kulkarni, executive director of the South Asian Network.
In California, you can find more information about the health insurance exchange at www.CoveredCA.com.
