CNN Films recently announced it has acquired the broadcast rights to DOCUMENTED, a film that explores the life of undocumented immigrant and Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, Jose Antonio Vargas, and his journey out of the shadows.
“The film is in honor of 11 million undocumented immigrants – many of us Americans in all but papers. And, the film is dedicated to parents everywhere who dream of better futures for their children,” Vargas told CNN.
Vargas immigrated from the Philippines at age 12, attended San Francisco State University and embarked on a successful print journalism career, all while keeping his true citizenship status a secret.
He “outed” himself as undocumented in the 2011 New York Times essay, “My Life as an Undocumented Immigrant”. The film follows Vargas as he travels around America telling his story and connecting with other immigrants with similar stories.
CNN plans to premiere DOCUMENTED in the second quarter of 2014 as a CNN Films broadcast. DOCUMENTED is a production of Apo Productions and Define America, a non-profit media campaign that promotes conversation about immigration, citizenship, and identity in a demographically-changing America.
