A task force is working on a proposal at the University of Washington for a Pacific Islander Studies program, reports The Daily.
The proposal must show the possible curriculum and value of such a program.
Some Pacific Islander students says this is something they’ve been looking forward to since been accepted into the University.
“So the discussion of Pacific Islander Studies as a major is not something totally new, it’s stuff that was promised to us students when we were in high school.” said fifth year student Mario Teulilo.
The diversity of the Pacific Islander community makes this a challenge, according to Taylor Ahana, director of the Pacific Islander Student Commission (PISC).
Students come and go and the debate often dies down when active students move on.
There is no timeline of when a proposal needs to be put in place.
