Fusion: Radical Brownies Offer New Take on Scouting

CATEGORIES

radical browniesA group of 8 – 12 year old young girls in Oakland are earning their merit badges unlike any other scouts before them, reports Fusion.

The Radical Brownies perform acts of social justice to earn such badges as “Radical Beauty,” “Black Lives Matter” and “LGBT ally.”

All the girls in the group are girls of color and are of mixed race.

“Children are more aware than we think; it’s important to not shelter children from real issues that we’re living,”  said co-founder Anayvette Martinez. “It’s especially important for young girls of color to feel empowered.”

The group is just a month old, but already has ten thousand likes on its Facebook page.

They are not affiliated with the Girl Scouts of America.
