WHNT: Alabama Officer Indicted in Beating of Indian Man

Eric ParkerA police officer from Madison, Alabama has been indicted in the video taped beating of an Indian man, reports WHNT.

A federal grand jury indicted Officer Eric Parker on civil rights violations. He is expected to enter a not guilty plea. Video taken from a police dash cam shows Parker slamming Sureshbhai Patel to the ground seemingly without provocation.

Patel, who was visiting his grandson, was left partially paralyzed. He is expected to be released this week after seven weeks in the hospital, but his attorney says he faces a long recovery.

“For the public to trust police officers, it needs to know officers will be held accountable, and the felony civil rights charges filed against Parker, unlike the misdemeanor assault charge being pursued in state court, more accurately reflect the seriousness of Parker’s conduct,” said Hank Sherrod, Patel’s attorney.
