Dennis Liu’s new comic Raising Dion tells the story of a superhero from the mom’s point of view.
Liu signed autographs and talked to fans at University of Connecticut in Storrs.
“It’s superman from Martha Kent’s point of view or Batman from Alfred’s point of view,” Liu said to The Daily Campus . “Really, who’s the real hero, because if your parents don’t raise you properly then who will you become?”
Liu graduated from Taft University and NYU with a major in film. He started his career doing videos for advertisers and his Apple Mac Music Video quickly garnered a million hits on You Tube. He’s done music videos for Justin Timberlake, Mariah Carey and Michael Jackson. His short film Plurality received accolades. Raising Dion which was released in August is his first venture into comic books.
It’s a story of an African American single mother.
“I’m Taiwanese American, yet I’m telling an African American story,” he said. “My take on it is as long as the research is done well and the story is great, it really should be about the story and making sure it’s reflective of good values.”
