New York Police Department Officer Peter Liang has been convicted of manslaughter in the death of Akai Gurley, reports the New York Daily News.
He now faces a sentence of up to 15 years in prison.
Liang shot Gurley in a darkened stairwell while patrolling a New York public housing project.
The defense argued he accidentally pulled the trigger and the bullet ricochet, hitting Gurley.
Prosecutors in closing arguments had a different take. They say Liang intended to shoot Gurley, but missed, before the bullet bounced off the concrete wall and fatally hitting the young father of a two year old.
The case divided the Asian American community with some arguing he was a scapegoat for what amounted to an accident. Some rallied to his defense.
Others in the community said he deserved to be prosecuted just like any other officer who shot an unarmed man.
