Numerous speculation has surfaced about the resignation of current Secretary of State Rex Tillerson. The lack of coordination between the president and Tillerson has been evident for some time. His comment “The president thinks for himself” ,when asked about Trump’s response to the Charlottesville incident, has added fuel to the belief of a rift between the two.
UN Ambassador, Nikki Haley, seems to be the ideal replacement according to Washington insiders. Haley was first offered this role post election in November, but chose to decline considering her lack of foreign policy acumen and experience. Fortune reports that “over the past few months, however, she has been much more vocal on diplomatic issues than the actual secretary of state.”
As for the president, he seems to foster a fondness for Haley’s work as a United Nations Ambassador. American Bazzar furthers that Trump recognized her publicly for “doing an awfully good job for us…She is doing a spectacular job”.
It seems that Trump not only respects her work, but also values her opinion. She mentioned a private conversation between the two after Charlottesville that Fortune claims “ended with her words [were] taken very well”.

(Haley supports the Presidents comments on Charlottesville, and mentions her private conversation with him in the aftermath of the rally.)
