A man who was once a rising star in the Republican party has left the GOP to become a Democrat.
As Kurt Bardella put it in an opinion piece for USA Today, the Republicans “would rather elect a sexual predator who preys on underage teenagers at the local mall, than a crime-fighting prosecutor who happens to be a Democrat.”
The former communications consultant for Breitbart and other conservative causes is referring to Roy Moore, the GOP candidate for U.S. senate in Alabama who has been accused by at least 9 women of sexual harassment and child molestation.
President Trump has since been campaigning for Moore and the Republican party has given Moore their support after at first being reticent.
“The embrace of Moore by the Republican Party’s top “leadership” is all the proof you need to know that this is a party that no longer stands for anything,” he wrote. “I believe that the Democratic Party will do more to create equality in America than the Republican Party ever will.
“This is not a party I want to be associated with any longer. This is not a party that is trustworthy enough to protect innocent children from sexual predators,” wrote the Korean adoptee.
His resignation from the GOP surprised some, but not others within the GOP, reported the San Diego Union Tribune.
“I always had hopes for Kurt because he’s a smart kid,” said Escondido mayor Lori Holt Pfeiler, a registered Republican who has known Bardella for at least 17 years. “I was always more non-partisan, but Kurt seemed to be a confirmed Republican, a confirmed conservative. Of all the people, I would be most surprised that he would change.”
Others were a little more measured in their reaction.
“Within the party, there are people who pursue power at all costs, and there are people who believe that the principles of the Republican Party are the right principles,” said Jason Roe, a GOP consultant. “And I think that Kurt is in the latter category.”
