Constance Wu and Jimmy Yang Want to Send You to the Voting Booth Smiling

“Get your butt off the chair” and vote. That’s the message from actress Constance Wu in a new video message with fellow Crazy Rich Asian co-star Jimmy O Yang (third from right in WB photo).

The two released a public service announcement with the New Virginia Majority and We Stand Together, but the message applies to Asian Americans nationwide.

Yang, in a tongue in cheek exchange with Wu, wonders why folks can’t just vote online when he can buy lettuce online.

He then suggests a voting question of his own.

“Which Asian is hotter,” he asks as both Wu and Yang mug for the camera and the stunning results of their poll pop up instantly on the screen.

I won’t give away who won, but let’s just say the victor won by a landslide.

Between all the levity is a serious message.

“In this moment where immigrant communities of color are targeted by those in power, it is imperative that we organize and realize the power of our vote,” said Tram Nguyen, co-executive director of New Virginia Majority. “Whether our roots are from Vietnam, China, or India, we are a critical mass of diverse voices that change the landscape, not just in Hollywood, but through the halls of Washington, Richmond, and capitals across the nation.”

“Our families endured many hardships to come to the United States for its freedom and opportunity,” said Christine Chen of APIAVote. “Asian American and Pacific Islanders (AAPIs) can honor their family’s legacy and sacrifice by voting on November 6. APIAVote’s 2018 Asian American Voter Survey found that financial security, quality healthcare, good public schools, and safety from gun violence are the top issues motivating AAPI voters in this midterm election. To ensure their voices are heard, APIAVote and our partners are calling hundreds of thousands of voters to help them make their plans to vote and honor family’s legacy and sacrifice.”

Yang concludes by saying the level of voter participation of Asian Americans only merits a C+, B- maybe.

“My parents would have killed me. So go and vote.”
