The community in Belgrade, Montana is supporting an Indian American couple who stood up to a racist social media post, reports KTVQ.
Raj and Priyanka Singh own Curry Express. The married duo posted a video on social media promoting their restaurant. That’s when a man identifying himself as Richard Suttles commented that “I’m going to puke.”
The Singhs asked him to be respectful, but Suttles responded by getting nastier.
Your race is a insult to the Earth. You come here get a hand out and don’t do manual labor here but make a killing off our tax dollars. So to that, go *!% yourself.
“It’s something you wouldn’t expect from a town like Belgrade, a community that is close-knit,” Raj Singh said to the Bozeman Daily Chronicle.
Hundreds of people posted their support for the Singhs and called out Suttles on his Facebook page. Others urged the community to patronize the Curry Express as a way to counter Suttles racism. The Singhs say they are touched by the support, but also scared.
“It’s not just scary for us. It’s just the thought that prevails that might be scary for other ethnic groups and other ethnic communities. This happens to us, it can happen to anyone. There’s Chinese, there’s Japanese, there’s a few African Americans here, there’s very few Indians here, there’s Mexicans here,” said Raj to the Daily Chronicle.
