Alexi McCammond returned to NBC Wednesday after resigning from her position at Teen Vogue as executive editor over past anti-Asian tweets.
The Wrap reports McCammond briefly addressed the controversy on the Morning Joe before her report on Black women in the 2022 midterm elections.
“The last few weeks have been really painful, to be sure,” McCammond said, “not just for me but for many folks in the AAPI community and others who are hurt by all of this and I totally understand that and I’m just really grateful to have the opportunity to be reporting again on the issues that I care about, to really try to help lift up minority voices and the voices of folks from marginalized communities who might not get the coverage that they deserve otherwise.”
NBC did not return calls from The Wrap for comment, but host Mika Brzezinski talked about a cancel culture in welcoming McCammond back.
Her return comes the same week Teen Vogue announced her replacement.
According to the NY Post, Vogue hired Versha Sharma, a South Asian American they snagged from Now This News. There she worked as managing editor and oversaw election coverage as well as social media and daily news.
“Versha is a natural leader with a global perspective and deep understanding of local trends and issues — from politics and activism to culture and fashion — and their importance to our audience,” said Anna Wintour, global editorial director of Vogue and chief content officer of Condé Nast. “She is a masterful storyteller who can move from platform to platform with ease, and I am excited by her optimistic and expansive vision for Teen Vogue.”
McCammond left Teen Vogue shortly after Conde Nast announced her hiring and before she even began her new position. The staff at the magazine revolted against the hiring after 10-year-old tweets surfaced that were considered both anti-Asian and homephobic.
