The man authorities say killed 9 people at the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority in San Jose had been under investigation for making racist comments to co-workers.
NBC Bay Area reports fellow workers filed several complaints that Samuel Cassidy had made the remarks on the job as a station maintenance worker.
The story also quotes Cassidy’s former wife, Cecilia Yolanda Nelms, as saying he made threats to kill his co-workers during their marriage which ended in 2004, but she did not take the threats seriously.
The Wall Street Journal reports the Department of Homeland Security interviewed Cassidy in 2016 after finding he had books about terrorism and professed a hatred for his co-workers.
Cassidy killed 9 of his co-workers last week before killing himself.
On Saturday, mourners gathered at the Sikh temple to mourn the loss of Taptejdeep Singh and the eight other victims.
Singh has been hailed as a hero for running around to warn others while the shooting was in progress.
“His focus was saving other people. His focus was the people around him. What he could do to save them. Not focused on his own life,” said his brother Karman Singh.
Janelle Aguirre, sister of victim Michael Rudometkin, also attended the service.
“Never in my wildest dreams did I think this would happen in San Jose, or anywhere this shouldn’t happen. we’re distraught, sad devastated, lost.,” she said.
Also among the dead was Filipino American Paul Delacruz Megia.
