Naomi Osaka to donate winnings to Haiti quake relief

The deaths of at least 700 people following a devastating 7.2 magnitude quake that struck Haiti Saturday has touched tennis great Naomi Osaka.

The superstar who is Haitian on her father’s side and Japanese on her mother’s side tweeted “Really hurts to see all the devastation that’s going on in Haiti, and I feel like we really can’t catch a break.”

She pledged to donate all her winnings this week from the Western and Southern Open in Cincinnati to earthquake relief there.

Osaka is currently ranked number two in that tournament, so is expected to come away with prize money.

According to Sports Illustrated, the winner will receive $255,220 and the runner-up stands to get $188,945.

Osaka is coming from competing in the Tokyo Olympics where she lit the cauldron, but was eliminated in the third round.

She recently withdrew from both the French Ope and Wimbledon to concentrate on her mental well being.

She is currently the number 2 ranked tennis player in the world.
