Thanks to the support of our loyal readership, a deserving AsAmNews intern, who would otherwise not be able to accept an unpaid internship, will be awarded a $1500 scholarship this semester.
AsAmNews launched its first fundraiser back in November to wipe out the largest deficit it had faced in its almost nine year history. The fundraiser not only wiped out its financial shortfall, but gave AsAmNews a nice cushion.
“AsAmNews has only survived due to the generosity of its volunteers and readership,” the daily digital Asian American news site said in a statement. “Through the years, we have trained dozens of interns who have gone on to accept positions at such media and community outlets as the Washington Post, San Francisco Chronicle, Dallas Morning News, Fox26 Houston, KION/KCBA-TV Monterey and The Asian American Foundation. It has long bothered us that some potential applicants could not apply due to financial constraints. We hope this scholarship remedies that problem.”
To qualify for an AsAmNews internship, the applicant must agree to work a minimum of 8-10 hours a week for 15 weeks. They must either obtain college credit for the internship or get a professor or counselor to agree to advise them during the internship. Each intern receives constant feedback and guidance from our dedicated editing team.
AsAmNews hopes to offer one scholarship each to a fall, winter and summer intern. If you are willing to support this program, please consider making a contribution here. Anyone who contributes $20 or more will be added to our Bad Ass Asian Wall of Fame. While supply lasts, supporters who contribute $40 or more will receive a Bad Ass Asian t-shirt. As of today, we have just 8 adult smalls remaining, 11 adult mediums, 3 adult large and 15 adult extra large t-shirts.
Since its inception, AsAmNews has lived by its motto, “AsAmNews has Asian America in its heart.” We have sponsored numerous community events including the recent Rock Against Hate concert to support Stop AAPI Hate, CAAMfest, the Asian American International Film Festival, as well as voter registration drives and Chinese for Affirmative Action’s Celebration of Justice.
This scholarship is more evidence of our commitment to the community.
Anyone interested in applying for the internship can do so here.
