Mindy Kaling has launched her own boutique literary studio in partnership with Amazon to promote diversity in the publishing industry, NPR Illinois reports.
Mindy’s Book Studio will publish books from new and diverse authors selected by Kaling, The Hollywood Reporter reports.
“Throughout my career, I’ve been labeled as sort of unusual and an outlier for someone from my background,” Kaling said in an interview with NPR. “What I’m finding more and more is that I’m not that unusual — and there’s tons of women of color who are interested in comedy and write these incredibly funny books, and I just want to help people get to see them.”
Kaling loves romantic comedies, thrillers and coming-of-age stories that feature female protagonists. But ultimately the writer and director is interested in publishing a range of genres. She’s looking for bold characters.
“I love characters that want big things and are not subtle,” she told NPR.
Amazon will also work to adapt the books published by Mindy’s Book Studio into films, Publishers Weekly reports.
