A gunman shot and killed a government lawyer from the Philippines visiting relatives in Philadelphia, reports the Philadelphia Inquirer.
John Albert Laylo, 35, died Sunday morning after being shot in the back of the head while riding with his mother to the airport in a rideshare vehicle.
Police said a car came up from behind and fired several rounds into the Uber, then it pulled up alongside and fired additional shots.
Philippine Council General Elmer Cato said Laylo’s mother suffered cuts from glass fragments during the shooting. Authorities have not said if the gunman targeted their victims.
Laylo worked as a legislative staffer for opposition Sen Leila de Lima.
“He was so young and still full of dreams,” de Lima said Monday in Manila to ABC6. He remained hopeful the suspect would be arrested “for the brutal and senseless act.”
Laylo’s mother, Leah Bustamante Laylo, posted about her grief on Facebook.
“Never did I imagine or dream that its almost the end of our vacation will be like this! We traveled together and we are supposed to go home together! I will bring him home soon in a box!” she posted.
