India has allegedly deported a Sikh American journalist who was on his way to visit his family in northern Punjab.
According to The Independent UK, Angad Singh, a news producer for Vice News, was stopped by immigration officials at a Dehli airport on Wedendsay night.
His mother, Gurmeet Kaur, told BBC News he was detained and deported shortly after landing in Dehli.
“Angad sent a message after he landed at the international airport in Delhi,” Kaur told BBC News.
“Around 15 minutes later, he sent another message that immigration officials had confiscated his passport. Then, he was deported,” she added.
Singh was allegedly not given a reason for his deportation. The Indian government has not yet commented on the issue.
The Singh family told BBC News the young journalist covered several important people’s movements throughout Asia. He made documentaries about those movements in countries like Sri Lanka, Hong Kong, Myanmar, India and Pakistan. His work covering the second wave of COVID-19 in India earned him an Emmy nomination.
Singh’s mother believes his journalism scares the government.
“It is the stories that he did and the stories he is capable of. It is the love for his Motherland that they cannot stand. It’s not easy to be a Sikh… a journalist, a warrior of truth and justice,” she told BBC News.
