A man attempting to hike 21 miles in the Grand Canyon in less than 24 hours has died of unknown causes, reports CBS News.
The 55 year old has been identified as Ranjith Varma of Manassas, Virginia.
At this time it has not been confirmed his death is heat-related.
Temperatures on the day of his hike ranged from 85 on the South Rim to 105 degrees in the Inner Canyon on the bottom, the National Park Service reported.
“National Park Service search and rescue personnel responded to the call via helicopter,” NPS said in their statement to ABC News. “Given the location, specialized helicopter maneuvers were employed to allow rangers to assume care of the hiker, initiating advance life support efforts.”
The Park Service discourages hikers from attempting the trek in the middle of the day, especially in the summer. It advises hikers to bring plenty of water, wear a wide-brim hat, and pack a flashlight, sunscreen and food. You are also advised to wear waterproof clothing.
Varma had joined a group of six people on the hike. He became unresponsive about halfway through, reported the Guardian.
Funeral services are set for Sunday, September 17 at the Pierce Funeral Home in Manassas from 9 – Noon.
