The hit television Shōgun won big at the Emmy Awards on Sunday night, breaking a record for most Emmys won by a television drama in a single season.
The series went into Sunday night’s award with 14 wins at the Creative Arts Emmys a week ago. According to Variety, those awards alone were enough to break the record previously held by “John Adams” in 2008.
On Sunday, Shōgun won four Primetime Emmy Awards:
- Best drama
- Best directing for a drama series
- Outstanding lead actor in a drama series, Hiroyuki Sanada
- Outstanding lead actress in a drama series, Anna Sawai
During his acceptance speech, Sanada, who played Yoshii Toranaga, described the show as an “East-meets-West dream project with respect.”
“‘Shōgun’ taught me that when people work together, we can make miracles,” he said.
