According to ABC7, the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) arrested a man in Chinatown on Sunday afternoon after multiple 911 calls reported a man walking through the area with a loaded assault rifle.
The suspect, identified as 54-year-old Lamar Edwards, was taken into custody without incident near Cesar Chavez Avenue around 2:20 p.m. Officers found Edwards carrying a fully loaded AK-47-style assault rifle, which posed a significant public safety concern. As reported by News Minimalist, the rifle’s magazine was fully loaded, but there were no indications that Edwards pointed the weapon at anyone or made threats.
Authorities emphasized that Edwards, a convicted felon, is legally prohibited from possessing firearms. He was booked on suspicion of felony firearm possession and remains in custody without bail as the investigation continues.
The incident has raised renewed discussions about public safety and illegal firearm possession, especially in busy areas like Chinatown.
