Portland man arrested for bias crime

A Portland man was charged with a bias crime earlier this week after verbally and physically harassing an Asian American male at a light rail stop, The Oregonian reports.

38-year-old Daniel Hutchens allegedly approached the victim while he was waiting at a MAX train stop on Dec. 15. According to The Oregonian, Hutchens asked the victim if he was Chinese and punched the victim in the face before he could answer.

Hutchens is charged with second-degree bias crime and harassment.

Earlier today, six people shouted racial slurs and physically assaulted an Asian woman for not wearing a mask on the subway. According to a previous AsAmNews article, the suspects have not been apprehended.

The incident occurred near New York’s Greenwich Village. The 32-year-old victim “sustained bruising and suffered substantial pain.”
