The President, First Lady and Vice President chose the start of Lunar New Year to all addressed the growing tide of anti-Asian racism in the United States.
The First Couple, speaking jointly from the White House, wished “all who celebrate” a Happy Lunar New Year.
Given the times, the President did not ignore the ugly face of harassment, bullying and and hatred facing the Asian American community during the pandemic.
“Amid the pain of this pandemic, the loss of life and livelihoods, we’ve seen another tragedy: racism, harassment, hate crimes against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. It’s simply wrong. It’s a stain on our national character.”
He reiterated his executive order directing the federal government to advance racial equity and his memo specifically acknowledging anti-Asian racism.
Vice President Harris also spoke to the hate crimes she’s seen in her home state and across the country.
“Hate crimes and violence against Asian Americans and Asian immigrants have skyrocketed during the pandemic. That’s why our Administration has taken actions to address these xenophobic attacks. We must continue to commit ourselves to combating racism and discrimination, ” she tweeted.
