The University of Southern California Thursday agreed to pay a total of more than $1 billion to alleged victims of a campus gynecologist accused of sexually abusing them.
Many of the victims are believed to be Asian American students.
NBC reports the latest settlement announced calls for $842 million to be paid to the women patients. That’s on top of a previously announced settlement of $215 million.
According to the NY Post, each of the women in the latest settlement will receive $1.2 million.
George Tyndall worked for as chief gynecologist at the USC student health clinic from 1989 to 2016. He faces criminal charges with abusing at least 21 patients as young as 17 and dating back to 2009.
“(Tyndall) developed and perfected his predatory M.O. early on in his tenure at USC — a pattern that he continued to employ to gain the trust of and harm young Trojan women over decades,” Jane Doe No. 48 said in the lawsuit, according to the Post.
“I am deeply sorry for the pain experienced by these valued members of the USC community,” USC President Carol L. Folt said to NBC. “We appreciate the courage of all who came forward and hope this much needed resolution provides some relief to the women abused by George Tyndall.”
Attorney Gloria Allred represented 72 of the alleged victims.
“For many years, USC knew of inappropriate conduct by (Tyndall) but failed to take appropriate measures to protect innocent students who were under his care,” Allred said, according to the Post.
