A Chinese restaurant located in San Francisco’s Chinatown is reeling from multiple vandalism incidents that both physically and financially damaged its business.
Dim Sum Corner, according to CBS San Francisco, has suffered multiple attacks in the past year. Two have come in the past week: on Thursday, a man attempted to hit one of its windows, and on Saturday a man used a slingshot to shatter another window. As a result, the broken window was covered with a plastic sheet.
The restaurant’s Managing Partner Jaynry Mak told CBS that repairs will cost around $2,500, further compounding its financial problems that originated from COVID-19. Mak said that sales are just 20% of what they were before the coronavirus.
“Small businesses and restaurants in San Francisco — we are already struggling and really facing incredible challenges due to the pandemic,” Mak said. “And now to have to make repairs is another additional unnecessary challenge that really affects our livelihood.”
The restaurant has set up a GoFundMe page to help pay for the repairs.
Mak added she believed that the vandals are targeting Asian businesses. CBS reported that police arrested Steven Gaffney this month for multiple burglaries and vandalism incidents across San Francisco, including in Chinatown. It is not known whether he is being charged in the attacks on Dim Sum Corner.
In May, Mak told the San Francisco Examiner that she closes the restaurant early so that employees can travel home safely while it is still light out. Violent attacks on Asian Americans have spiked in San Francisco this year.
“It really concerns us and really makes us rethink whether we can have this business open,” Mak said of the vandalism to CBS.
